Outwardly Sherman, West Virginia seems like the perfect retreat from urban life: pristine, clear of the city’s influence, full of local color and nestled in an idyllic location in the Appalachian mountains. With plenty of hunting and fishing opportunities for tourists, and a medium-sized hospital now long since abandoned, Sherman has had to rely on tourism to keep itself afloat.

But small-town hospitality is a thin veneer… and sometimes the mask slips and reveals a face most would rather not see.
